Stella Bespoke Rooflights Add Finishing Touch to Stunning Country Home

The Project

Lumley Seat is a former Georgian landscape folly converted into a house in the 20th Century. It is situated to the North East of Stanstead Park, a country estate comprising of an 1,800-acre park with woodland and open land dating back to 1686.

This stunning country Grade 2* Listed house lies in the parish of Stoughton, West Sussex, near the village of Rowlands castle.

An Historic Building

Steeped in history, Lumley Seat was originally built as a temple or landmark, constructed in around 1770 under the ownership of George Montague-Dunk. 2nd Earl of Halifax, whose mother was Mary Lumley, eldest daughter of Richard, 1st Earl of Scarborough.

The original building had six columns, of which the four centre ones formed a projecting portico with pediment over and niches with semi-domes behind the columns. Today Lumley Seat is a privately owned residence, which has undergone significant renovation works since its original construction some 250 years ago.

Transforming Space with Light

A recent extension in 2020 saw the construction of a completely new guest annexe, complete with 3 bedrooms, luxury bathroom and a large kitchen-dining area. The development offers a delightfully spacious area, which opens out via patio doors onto the formal lawns and grounds of this beautiful and quintessentially English country home.

In order to make the most of this stunning new space and flood the kitchen-dining area with light, specialist conservation builders T Couzens & Sons approached Stella Rooflight. The rooflight would need to provide a low profile appearance from the exterior to satisfy the Conservation Officer, and a quality finish on the interior that would match the extremely high standard of construction.

High Quality Bespoke Rooflights

Stella Rooflight provided a bespoke fixed 316 Marine Grade stainless steel conservation rooflight, sized 1368 x 1669mm, comprising 2 glazing bars and a high specification genuine self-clean glazing with solar control. Internally the rooflight was finished with a stunning cedar, white painted solid wood liner.

Testimonial

“I am very happy with the skylight; its clean sharp outlines are way ahead of the rather clumsy look of the standard ‘conservation’ rooflights.

“Moreover, your capability to produce bespoke sizes is a great plus; it allowed us to get a light that harmonises with the building rather than having to tweak the building to accommodate the pre-determined sizes of the competition. And while I was initially frustrated by your lead time, the result was well worth the wait. I was particularly impressed that it arrived on the very day you had announced on confirmation of order.

“All in all, a very positive experience and a happy outcome!”
